A machine is a set of movable and fixed elements whose operation makes it possible to take advantage of, direct, regulate or transform energy, or perform work with a certain purpose. It is called machinery the set of machines that apply to the same end of the mechanism that gives movement to a device. A simple machine uses a single applied force transforming it into a resultant force, which does work by moving a single load (or overcoming an opposing force). If friction losses are omitted, the work done by the applied force is equal to the work done by the resulting force on the load. The machine can increase the magnitude of the force applied over a given distance (by transforming it into the resulting force), but at the cost of a proportional decrease in the distance traveled by the load.
