Soybeans

Soybeans also called soja beans or soya beans are a type of legume native of East Asia, widely grown for its edible bean, which has numerous uses. They are the largest global protein crop and the most efficient source of protein per hectare.

The world production of soybeans in 2020/21 is estimated to be 364 million metric ton with the USA as the largest soybeans producer at an estimated 131 million metric ton followed very closely by Brazil at 129.4 million metric ton.

Nigeria production in 2020 was 368,000 metric ton being the largest producer of soybean in Sub-Saharan Africa, followed by South Africa.

Soybeans are processed for their oil and meal for animal feeds. A smaller percentage is processed for human consumption and made products including soy milk, soy, flour, soy protein, tofu and many retail food products. Soybeans are also use3d in many non-food (industrial) products.
