Caraway, the dried fruit, commonly called seed, of Carum carvi, a biennial herb of the parsley family (Apiaceae, or Umbelliferae), native to Europe and western Asia and cultivated since ancient times. Caraway has a distinctive aroma reminiscent of anise and a warm, slightly sharp taste. The fruit, or seed, light to dark brown in colour, is a crescent about 0.2 inches (5 mm) long with five prominent longitudinal dorsal ridges. Caraway is used for digestive problems including heartburn, bloating, gas, loss of appetite, and mild spasms of the stomach and intestines. Caraway oil is also used to help people cough up egm, improve control of urination, kill bacteria in the body, and relieve constipation.
