A of unique Kangaroo Island propolis types, with plant resin source identified in most cases. Propolis rich in flavonoidsand methoxychalcones, particularly pinobanksin 3-acetate and a novel derivative thereof, has been observed arising from thekangaroo thorn wattle, Acacia paradoxa. Several propolis types from chemotypes of the sword sedge complex Lepidosperma viscidumhave also been identified, notably propolis types rich in Cand O-prenylated polyhydroxystilbenes (primarily3,5,4,5-tetrahydroxystilbenes), methoxystilbenes and cinnamic acid derivates.Bee Sanctuary: Kangaro0 Island, off the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia, is Australiaâs third largest island; approximately150 km long and 60 km at its widest. In the late 1800s, Southern Australia was graced with a bevy of beekeepers whoâd imported the pure bred Ligurian bees from theirnative Italy. At the time the bees were bought to Kangaro0 Island, its rugged strip of coats, with powdery white beaches andbright turquoise sea, was barely settled. Thanks to an 1885 act of parliament designating the land a bee sanctuary, Kangaro0Island has remained more or less pristine ever since. Because of the Islandâs isolation, absence of indigenous bee species, andample flowers, the Ligurian bees thrived without disease or interbreeding that normally plagues apiaries.
