Red yeast rice is a substance that's extracted from rice that's been fermented with a type of yeast called Monascus purpureus. Red yeast rice is a kind of food which also used in Chinese herbology and traditional Chinese medicine. Its use has been documented as far back as the Tang Dynasty in China in 800 AD. It is taken internally to invigorate the body, aid in digestion, and revitalize the blood. One of the most important ingredients in red yeast rice is monacolin K. It's also known as lovastatin, the active ingredient in the prescription drug Mevacor. Asia, and Chinese communities in North America, use red yeast rice in powdered form as a food coloring for fish or meat products, alcoholic or other beverages, cheeses, cakes, wines, flavouring, cosmetics, medicines and so on.

Several studies have shown that red yeast rice lowers blood preesure, blood fat, and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels. High cholesterol levels raise the risk of heart disease. Red yeast (Monascus purpureus) stops the action of an enzyme in the body that helps make cholesterol. It also reinforces the function of brain, soothes the nerves and stabilizes moods, and helps to cure impediment in memory and language.
