Thermally conductive compounds

Thermoplastics polymers are good thermal insulators which do not dissipate heat easily. We offer several Thermally conductive compounds with a thermal conductivity between 10 to 50 times higher than that of normal thermoplastic polymers. This will give the possibility to dissipate heat and to replace metals in heat sinks or other encapsulations. This can be done by injection moulded parts offering more design freedom, weight reduction and part consolidation giving no corrosion issues.

It is possible to make compounds electrically insulating and at the same time thermally conductive by use of thermal conductive minerals as fillers. The thermal conductivity of these grades is in a range of 1 – 3 W/mK. These compounds can be made with or without a certain level of flame retardancy.

Furthermore, we can provide both thermally and electrically conductive materials by using, for example, special carbon additives. With these compounds, the thermal conductivity is in a range of 1 – 20 W/mK, the electrical conductivity being as low as 10 Ohm/sq.

The advantages of thermally conductive compounds over die cast metals are:

• Weight reduction through lower density and by allowing thinner walled designs;
• Cost reduction because of lower tooling costs and less material usage;
• Simpler and single-step manufacturing process;
• Design freedom allowing integration of functions and increase of thermal transfer by convection.

Our thermally conductive compounds can be based, among others, on PP, nylons, PBT and even PPS or PEEK. This will depend on your requirements and the application.
