The American Eagle gold coin program began in 1986. This 1996 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coin was issued during the 10th anniversary year of the program, and you can buy coins from that minting at JM Bullion.
The obverse of this coin has an image that youâll undoubtedly know on sight if youâve been in the coin collecting world for any period of time. The iconic image was originally created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and used on gold eagle coins prior to 1933. When the U.S. Mint created the American Eagle Program in 1986 to create modern gold and silver eagle coins in a variety of weights and face values, it chose to honor Saint-Gaudensâ work by reproducing it on the modern coins. The image did get a slight upgrade to enhance the details in modern minting processes and ensure there were 50 stars within the border. The image itself depicts Liberty striding boldly forth. She is shown against rays of sunlight that seem to rise from the horizon, and sheâs carrying the symbolic torch and olive branch sheâs often associated with. Look behind her to the bottom left to see a small image of the national capitol building in the background.
While the obverse image was taken from a historic design, the Mint commissioned a new image for the reverse of the American Gold Eagle Coins in 1986. That image appears on all the gold coins in this program through 2020 and was designed by Miley Busiek Frost. Her design features a family of bald eagles in and around their nest. The male eagle is flying into the nest and also carries an olive branchâa symbol of peace.
