Sodium Hydrogen CarbonateSodium Bicarbonate BPNaHCO384.0 -- CAS 144-55-8
Action and useAntacid; used in treatment of electrolyte deficiency.
DEFINITIONContent99.0 per cent to 101.0 per cent.NaHCO3
CHARACTERSAppearance: White or almost white, crystaler.Solubility: Soluble in water, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent). When heated in the dry state or in solution, it gradually changes into sodium carbonate.
IDENTIFICATIONA. To 5 ml of solution S add 0.1 ml of nolhalein solution. A pale pink colour is produced. Heat; gas is evolved and the solution becomes red.B. It gives the reaction of carbonates and bicarbonates.C. Solution S gives reaction of sodium.
TESTSSolution S: Dissolve 5.0 g in 90 ml of carbon dioxide-free water and dilute to 100.0 ml with the same solvent.Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear and colourless.Carbonates: The of freshly prepared solution S is not greater than 8.6Chlorides: Maximum 150 ppmSulteMaximum 150 ppmAmmonium: Maximum 20 ppm.Arsenic: Maximum 2 ppm, determined on 0.5 g.Calcium: Maximum 100 ppm.To a suspension of 1.0 g in 10 ml of distilled water add hydrochloric acid until neutral and dilute to 15 ml with distilled water.Iron: Maximum 20 ppm.Heavy metals: Maximum 10 ppm.
