United Steel Industries was incorporated in the Fujairah Free Zone in June 2004. After having conducted extensive research, the shareholders were among the first to realize that the strong economic fundamentals of the GCC area and the UAE in particular would lead to a major increase of demand for construction material and, in particular, for steel. USI was conceived as a specialized rolling mill for bars and wire rod, catering to the construction sector in the UAE. The shareholders selected the Fujairah Free Zone because of its strategic location on the Eastern seaboard of the UAE. Most new capacity by established steel companies would be built close to the markets in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Most of the UAE’s demand for steel of around 7 million tons per year (mtpa) has been generated between these two cities. Land is expensive there and the location in Fujairah offers the additional benefit of having direct access to a seaport, which allows cheap transport by barges to distribution points closer to the centers of consumption. United Steel Industries specializes on basic steel supplies for the construction industry. These are mainly straight rebar and wire rod. Both are used to fortify cast concrete structures and elements. These concrete elements are widely used in the construction of houses and high‐rise buildings as well as for other industrial buildings and infrastructure projects like bridges, fly‐overs and tunnels. The factory is designed for the production of:
-Straight rebar with 10 to 40 mm in diameter in 12 meter lengths,
-Rebar with 6 to 16 mm in diameter in 2 ton coils,
-Wire rod of 5.5 to 16mm in diameter in 2 ton coils.
