Top 10 b2b Ecommerce Sites in Singapore

The vivid signs of an B2B e-commerce boom in Singapore, with an increase of 87%, reaching a turnover of 4 billion dollars have not prevented, however, that its digital economy was affected by the covid-19 pandemic.

This has contributed to a drop of 24%, representing about 3 billion dollars, which means, in the digital economy as a whole, about 9000 million dollars this year, according to a report by Google, Temasek and the consulting firm Bain & Company, according to information published by The Strait Times portal.

However, the report has given off some optimism by stating that Singapore’s digital economy is on track to reach a turnover of around $22 billion in GMV, which is the Growing Merchandising Value, for its acronym in English, which represents the total amount of sales of products or services in a marketplace over a period of time) by 2025, as the sectors severely affected by the pandemic generated by covid-19 are expected to recover.

The annual Southeast Asian e-Economy Study, first published in 2016, covers Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

It examines trends and data from seven sectors of the digital economy: B2B e-commerce, transportation and online travel, media, food, digital financial services, and newly added sectors of the health technology (healthtech) and educational technology (edtech). Excluding travel, Singapore’s digital economy grew by 20% to $7.6 billion.

A partner and a senior member in Southeast Asia at Bain & Company, says that Singapore’s B2B e-commerce segment including innovative companies like SG Arrival Card, Visafly or Passport Visa, has overtaken that of online travel and is expected to grow in the coming years to become the largest sector in this country. Travel within the country is still expected to be slow.

Almost one-third of all Singapore digital service consumers were new customers. More than nine out of 10 new consumers are expected to continue to use at the very least, one digital service.

For its part, the transportation sector fell 26% to $ 2 billion this year as more people work from home and some avoided shared transportation.

As a consequence of the new situation, the population spends more time online, 30 minutes more compared to 3.6 hours in the pre-pandemic, according to the study. Additionally, with more time at home, consumers have become fonder of video games and other products, boosting the online media segment by 24% to $ 1.8 billion.

Digital financial services have also been given a boost, with increased use of mobile banking applications, including a host of wealth management platforms.

The total value of investments in Singapore’s digital economy increased to $ 2.5 billion in 325 deals till July, including a whopping $ 1.8 billion in the second half of last year.

The report notes that Singapore continues to be a regional hub for various sectors of the digital economy, such as fintech software solutions, due to its strong startup ecosystem. The city-state is home to the regional headquarters of B2B e-commerce unicorns like Lazada and Shopee’s owner Sea.

Finally, the report notes that Southeast Asia’s digital economy as a whole will exceed $ 300 billion (€ 253.25 billion) by 2025, driven by B2B e-commerce and online media consumption.
