Top 10 Diaper Manufacturers in China

Top 10 Diaper Manufacturers in China

The nappies or diaper market will reach $68.3 billion in 2027. Nappies/diapers/pants constitute the largest sector in value of all hygiene products and is also second in importance within all disposable products, and after toilet paper. In terms of increased value, nappies/diapers/pants have stood out and achieved second place in performance among all disposable paper products since 2008, while the much smaller category of incontinence products is presented with faster growth. This continued increase reflects the fact that these products have established themselves as offering tangible benefits that global consumers are willing to pay for.

While the sector, in general, has shown remarkable growth since 2008, there is a marked difference in performance by region. The mature markets of Western Europe, North America, and Australia-Asia have registered lower growth values for the sector, Western Europe with the lowest level of 2%. In contrast, emerging regions, with the exception of Latin America (which presented a growth of 7%), showed a significant increase for the sector, Eastern Europe of 20%, according to data presented by Euromonitor International (Chicago, IL).

Demographics play an important role in the regional composition. While the frequency of births is low in several of the Western markets; reciprocally occurs in several of the emerging markets. Likewise, the increase in the frequency of births, and the development of retail stores have contributed to greater availability and more users. In addition to demographic factors, in countries such as Romania and Nigeria, which recorded the highest growth in value of 26% and 17%, respectively, more women are employed and require the convenience of disposable diapers, and it is they who are more willing to buy. These complementary factors serve to create the ideal circumstances for the sector to stand out, increasing world consumption despite less favorable conditions occurring in developed markets.

As a result of the demographic factors affecting the sector, nappies or diapers for newborns are the most prominent globally in 2008 with growth of 11% and achieving US $ 5 billion for the category. Unsurprisingly, the Eastern European and Asia-Pacific markets posted the biggest gains for the category, and well above average values. Common nappies, however, continue to dominate the sector in quantity, reaching US $ 12 billion in 2008. Worldwide, disposable pants maintain their position, registering the lowest level of growth and constituting the smallest category in the sector, with US $ 4 billion. The category is not available to many consumers, and is generally used by parents who can buy new, more sophisticated and higher-cost products, which means that growth is limited in many emerging markets.

According to data from Euromonitor, the company Procter & Gamble dominates nappies/diapers/pants globally, with 36% of the market, mostly due to sales of its Pampers brand. Kimberly-Clark is the most important competitor with 26% of the market. Uni-Charm is in third place with 5%, followed by SCA with 3%. The top three managed to increase their market share in 2008, largely due to increased presence in emerging markets – Procter & Gamble announced its $ 19 million investment in its first diaper manufacturing plant in South Africa, while Uni-Charm expanded in that country with the acquisition of DSG, and also began construction of its first manufacturing plant in Russia.

Meanwhile, in more traditional markets, P&G has relied on traditional defensive measures including branding, coupons and other promotions to protect its position, as well as more creative strategies such as alliances with distributors to the public to demonstrate the value of the Pampers brand in comparison to generic brands. In the case of Walmart, the largest distributor to the public in the USA, these efforts led to the decision of this firm to eliminate the generic brand White Cloud, previously produced by Tyco, and therefore increase the shelf space for Pampers.

Likewise, in Europe P&G launched Pampers Simply Dry and Simply Clean, which, like the Luvs brands in the USA, offer quality products at a reasonable cost. These diapers have a high absorbency center that minimizes the risk of wet skin for the baby. They also have rear ears that stretch, and are flexible allowing a comfortable fit, and booties designed to prevent losses, leaving mothers with the peace of mind that the baby will stay dry.

“Procter has been very smart in providing a product for every price range in the diaper market,” said Ms. Hannah. “This has really allowed them to stand up for themselves and make sure they have a product for every consumer.”
