Malé, Maldives – The newest report from the International eCommerce Foundation claims online shopping in the Maldives is set to take off.
According to their 2016-2022 ‘eCommerce Market Opportunity Index’, the country comes in at 37th overall due to its fast-growing economy, high internet penetration rates, and willingness of consumers to pay for quality products online.
“The growth will not only come from local demand,” says one industry analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Most people living here are actually foreign workers but they send money back home to help relatives or friends buy something that’s not available locally.” So far this year dozens of foreigners have bought expensive imported goods like clothes, makeup, and other consumer items using local websites. Their shopping experience is then shared with friends and family, who often make a purchase themselves. Companies like Jumia, Zalora, and YESIL have been quick to start offering services online as well as some local eCommerce entrepreneurs.
“Within five years we expect there to be more shops selling products from around the world than those which only sell locally made items,” says one developer of a new online marketplace website that will launch in the coming months. “Our research shows most people want imported goods because they’re better quality and a lot cheaper.”
