The genus name Punica refers to that Phoenicians, who were active in broadening its cultivation, partly for religious reasons. The rind of the fruits and the bark of the pomegranate tree are used as a traditional remedy against diarrhoea, dysentary and intestinal parasites. The major colouring components in pomegranate are tannins, extracted from the fresh and dried peels. Pomegranate is considered as a plant based yellow dye, which are tannin, along with some parts of pelletierin called tanante, about 19% along with pelletierine. The main colouring agent in the pomegranate peel is granatonine which is present in the alkaloid from N-methyl graatonine. Punica granatum is from the family Punicacea. It grows in all warm countries of the world and was originally a native of Persia. Colours obtained exhibit good fastness to washing, rubbing and light.
