Sodium perborate (PBS) is a white, odorless, water-soluble chemical compound with the chemical composition NaBO3. It crystallizes as the monohydrate,
NaBO3·H2O, trihydrate, NaBO3-3H2O and tetrahydrate, NaBO3-4H2O. The monohydrate and tetrahydrate are the commercially important forms.
Sodium perborate releases oxygen rapidly at temperatures over 60°C. To make it active at lower temperatures (40–60 °C), it has to be mixed with a suitable activator, typically
tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED).

DEFINITION
Content96.0 per cent to 103.0 per cent.
CHARACTERSAppearance: Colourless, prismatic crystals or white or almost white powder, stable in the crystalline form.
Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water, with slow decomposition. It dissolves in dilute mineral acids.
IDENTIFICATIONA. Mix 1 ml of a saturated solution with a mixture of 1 ml of dilute sulphuric acid and 0.2ml of a 70 g/l solution of potassium dichromate, shake with 2 ml of ether and
allow to stand. A blue colour is produced in the ether layer.
B. The mixture obtained by treating about 100 mg with 0.1 ml of sulphuric acid and 5 ml of methanol burns with a greenish flame when ignited.
C. It gives reaction of sodium.
