A junction box, box junction, junction box, junction box or electrical box is a container for electrical connections, usually intended to hide from view and discourage tampering. A small metal or plastic junction box may form part of an electrical conduit or thermoplastic sheath (TPS) of the system in a building. If it is designed for surface mounting, it is mostly used on ceilings, under floors or concealed behind an access panel - especially in residential or commercial buildings. Sometimes it includes integrated terminations to facilitate cable bonding. Similarly, a wall-mounted container or box primarily used to contain switches, sockets, and associated connection wiring is called a flush-mount, flush- mounted box or mechanism box. The term junction box can also be used for a larger item, such as a piece of urban furniture. In the UK, these items are often called a cabinet.
