Palm Acid Oil (PAO) which is obtained from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is used as a distilled fatty acid for biodiesel feedstock, animal feeding, and soap production. PAO is a by-product of palm oil chemical refining and is made up of FFA (above 50%) and neutral oil with a moisture content of 2-3%. It looks a lot like palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), however it has a lower FFA content. This product is no longer produced on a large scale outside of Europe since palm oil is processed by a sical process in Malaysia and Indonesia, which produces PFAD rather than PAO.
