WeCARE Association is a non-governmental health care organization with its head office in Kumba, Cameroon. It works to protect the health of women and girls in rural and urban areas in Cameroon. WeCARE was founded in 2010 by Mme. Maba-Atu Stella espe Teboh who was inspired by her passion to give an input in women’s reproductive health sector and family planning in local communities in the southwest region of Cameroon after observing the low awareness of women in this aspect as she works for the fight against HIV/AIDS. WeCARE originally started with the cervical and breast cancer screening program.
The motivation behind cervical cancer screening was the death of the team leader of their support group who died of cervical cancer after having recovered from her poor health status as she was diagnosed and placed on ARVs some two years back. The group of health care professionals realized that the care given by the hospitals and other NGOs for the welfare of the women PLWHA (Persons Living With HIV/AIDS) was not enough. These urge them to start the cervical and breast cancer screening program and deliver better services to women and girls, especially in rural areas.
Today, the challenges facing Cameroon’s maternal health has made WeCARE expand her activities to cover issues such as Mother and Child Health Care, Newborn / Infant Care, Child Health and Development, Post-Reproductive period (menopause), Genital cancer screening program, Family planning and minimum health package of health. With two offices in the South West and West Region of Cameroon, WeCARE’s activities continue to grow bigger and further to involve many rural communities in the whole country with the hope of extending it to other countries in Africa and beyond.
