Top 10 B2B Ecommerce Websites in Saudi Arabia

B2B Ecommerce Websites in Saudi Arabia

The pandemic caused by covid-19 has accelerated the growth of electronic commerce. Globally, sales are expected to go from $4.13 trillion in 2020 to $ 8 trillion in 2021, which will represent approximately 20% of total retail sales.

Similar growth is taking place in the Gulf, with the 26.9 billion dollars in 2018 expected to reach 48.6 billion in 2022, as can be seen from the information published in Trade Arabia. This trend has been accelerated for two reasons: on the one hand, the greater penetration of the Internet, which allows consumers to buy easily through their mobile devices; and, on the other, the distribution of the population. In Saudi Arabia, 60% of the population is under 30 years old, which predisposes them to adopt eCommerce as a habitual means of purchase.

When it comes to e-commerce, Saudi Arabia ranks as the leading market in the Gulf in terms of growth and size. Last year, within the framework of mobility restrictions caused by the pandemic, total electronic transactions increased by 75%, Arab News reports, while their total value increased by 24% compared to 2019. For their part, the number of electronic outlets increased by 70% in the Saudi Kingdom. In a study carried out by Mastercard, whose information has been echoed by the Arab News portal, it is highlighted that food, health, clothing and banking are the sectors where eCommerce penetration is greatest. More than 68% of Saudi consumers buy food online, 73% clothes, 65% medicines and 64% operate through online banking. In addition, 58% of Saudi consumers say they buy more comfortably online than in store.

As a consequence of the increase in electronic transactions, the use of cash and withdrawals at ATMs have decreased. In the framework of Vision 2030, the authorities want to deepen this scenario. Thus, a priority objective of the Financial Sector Development Program is to reduce the amount of cash used in the kingdom by developing financial infrastructures that facilitate the transition to electronic payments. The goal is for electronic payments to account for 70% of all transactions in the kingdom by 2030, as reported by Arab News.

To achieve this, in October 2020 an Electronic Commerce Law was approved, which will allow to deepen the intensification of eCommerce observed and whose regulatory development came into force on January 31. Under the regulation, a new interbank transfer mechanism will be implemented this month, which will speed up the processing of payments between local banks and help strengthen the e-commerce industry. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia has been the first country in the world to provide Apple Pay services through a national payment mechanism (MADA) that is installed in 92% of electronic points of sale in the kingdom.

In short, the pandemic has accelerated the change that was taking place in consumer habits.
